Are Learning Disabilities Treatable?

Are learning disabilities treatable? While some scientists believe this is not the case, managing the disability may be just as valuable as a cure.

Although learning difficulties may not always be curable, they are treatable. In fact, many people with learning difficulties go on to live normal productive lives, while many more become known for their extraordinary achievements. There is a good proportion of those who learning to cope with learning difficulties on their own, but for those who don’t, there are treatments available to help people with learning difficulties realize their true potential.

Special Education

The most common treatment for learning difficulties is special education that accommodates the needs of those with the condition while capitalizing on their strengths. This could include individualized tutelage, assistive tools such as hardware and software, and even the inclusion of specialists. Some say that medications that enhance concentration in tandem with special education could also prove effective, but this remains a controversial issue.

Neuroplasticity and Further Developments

As health and psychology experts continue to search for new treatments and interventions for learning difficulties, more attention is being paid to the role of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity, also known as brain and cortical plasticity, refers to the brain’s tendency to change the roles of neurons in the development of informational networks in addition to rearranging such networks and creating new neurons in order to supplement such changes. Goal-directed experimental programs have been contrived that seem to manipulate nueroplasticity, resulting in the belief that such methods could be applied to the correction of any type of mental dysfunction, including mental retardation and trauma. This has also been applied to learning difficulties, in that such treatments could be applied to special education techniques. As the area continues to grow, further breakthroughs are being discovered that can potentially eliminate hindrances associated with learning difficulties.
